Your employer cannot retaliate if you report fraud or other illegal conduct.
Los Angeles, California ▪ Whistleblower Law Attorney
According to federal and state whistleblower laws, your employer cannot retaliate against you for doing the right thing when you report fraud or other illegal activity. For example, the California False Claims Act and federal qui tam laws are in place to protect workers who file a legal grievance when they see their employer commit negligence or fraud while fulfilling a government contract. The phrase is short for qui tam pro domino rege quam pro se ipso in hoc parte sequitur and literally translates to "he who sues for the king (society) as well as for himself." Today, qui tam is more regularly referred to as "whistleblower laws."
The U.S. Congress enacted the Whistleblower Protection Act to "send a strong, clear signal to whistleblowers that Congress intends that they be protected from any retaliation related to their whistleblowing." 135 Cong.Rec. 5033 (1989) (Explanatory Statement of S. 20). Subsequently, this helps assure taxpayers that their taxes are being used in the best interest of our citizens.
